What is the most effective way to study?
Finding the best way to study is a continuous process. It is not about cramming and rushing to absorb knowledge the night before an exam. We need to constantly improve our study skills to better understand what brings high effectiveness in learning.
Mastering effective study habits not only helps you study more easily but also enables you to achieve higher grades and greater success in your academic journey.
Lac Hong University in general, and students of the Foreign Trade major in particular, have long upheld a strong tradition of academic dedication. Studying diligently alone is not enough; students actively explore and create truly effective learning methods. Below is a compilation of sharing from Foreign Trade students of Lac Hong University regarding effective study methods.
STUDY IN AN ORGANIZED MANNER
Always prepare and carry a plan for your assignments. Complete homework, essays, and small projects as soon as they are assigned and ensure that you meet deadlines.
MAINTAIN FULL CONCENTRATION IN CLASS
Stay focused and try not to be distracted while lecturers are teaching. You can practice your listening skills by concentrating on the lecture and taking notes in your own words. This ensures that you both hear and understand what is being taught in class.
AVOID DISTRACTIONS
Distractions are everywhere – from mobile phones to social media and friends. Identify what distracts you in class and find ways to avoid these interruptions. If possible, choose an appropriate seat. It is best not to sit next to friends if you know they may reduce your focus. A useful tip is to turn off your mobile phone. Turning off your phone also shows that you are paying attention to your lecturers.
TAKE COMPLETE AND CAREFUL NOTES
Careful and thorough note-taking during lectures helps you process information effectively. These notes will also serve as study materials for review before examinations. Talk with classmates or consult your lecturer if you miss any information related to the lesson and ensure that your notes are complete.
ASK IMMEDIATELY IF YOU DO NOT UNDERSTAND
If you do not understand the lecture – ask. Ask your lecturers, ask your friends, ask anyone who can provide clarification. If you are not comfortable asking in front of others, write yourself a reminder to discuss the matter with your lecturer after class.
CREATE A STUDY SCHEDULE/PLAN
When creating a study schedule, review your planner and consider the tasks that need to be completed. Think about the types of questions that may appear on the exam and the topics that will be covered so you know what to focus on. Set specific goals for each study session, such as how much content you aim to master that day.
REVIEW CLASS NOTES EVERY EVENING
After class, review and relearn from your notes. Reviewing helps transfer information from short-term memory to long-term memory, which will be beneficial when taking exams later.
COMMUNICATE WITH YOUR LECTURERS
Lecturers are always valuable companions in school and at the lecture hall. Talk to them, ask questions, and clarify the knowledge you have not yet mastered. A small tip: proactively seeking help greatly supports your lecturers as well.
FIND AN IDEAL STUDY SPACE
The best study location is quiet, well-lit, and situated in an area with minimal traffic. Ensure that you have a clear and organized space for studying and writing. Individual needs vary, so it is important to find a place that suits you.
BREAK STUDY TIME INTO SHORT INTERVALS
After every 30 minutes of study, take a short break of 10–15 minutes to recharge. Short study sessions are more effective and help you maximize your study time. Foreign Trade students have been applying the Pomodoro method – an effective time management technique.
WRITE CLEAR AND EASY-TO-UNDERSTAND NOTES
You can make studying easier by summarizing your class notes. Underline or highlight key terms. Additionally, create visual aids such as charts, mind maps, or outlines to organize and simplify information. This will significantly enhance your memory retention.
STUDY IN A GROUP
Working with classmates fosters an interactive environment that keeps you engaged. It provides opportunities to test your knowledge with others. You can ask each other questions about lesson content and build mutual confidence.
STUDY SMART WITHOUT STRUGGLE
Knowing how to study effectively is a skill that benefits you for a lifetime. Developing and enhancing effective study skills requires time and perseverance. The methods above have been successfully applied by Foreign Trade students of Lac Hong University. By following these suggestions, you will discover the learning style that best suits you, and it will serve as a guiding principle for your future success.
